As there is a Woodmen Circle emblem on the headstone, Mrs. Carlton was the member of the organization. Sadly, her husband was killed in a freak accident, crushed by a log, while working as an engineer on the Cotton Belt Railroad. Mrs. Carlton only survived him by a few months, which sounds rather ominous...
The family name, "Carlton", is atop this gray granite headstone. Note how the three links of the Odd Fellows are worked into the Woodmen Circle emblem, probably a nod to Mr. Carlton -- Mrs. Carlton would have been a Rebekah. The inscriptions read:
Robert M.
July 31, 1863
Jan. 16, 1907
---
Sarah E.
His Wife
Feb. 8, 1863
Apr. 4, 1907
---
They steer'd their course to the same quiet shore
Not parted long, and now to part no more.
Was the inscription legible?: Yes
