Henry Duncan Graham Crerar
1888-1965

Born in Hamilton, Ontario, Crerar joined the Canadian military in 1910, and was responsible for designing the largest and most successful creeping barrage of WWI, earning him the Distinguished Service Order. At the outbreak of WWII, he was promoted to Brigadier General and later became the Chief of the general staff, and in 1941, was named the Commanding Officer of the Canadian I Corps. In March 1944, he assumed command of the first Canadian Army and went on to become the first Canadian to gain the rank of full General while still in active service at the front.
