Gerhard Herzberg

Born in Hamburg, Germany, Herzberg studied physics at Darmstadt Technical University. In 1935 he fled to Canada to escape the Nazi regime. At the University of Saskatchewan he was quickly appointed research professor of physics. In 1948 he joined the National Research Council in Ottawa and was director of physics there from 1949 to 1969. He is known world wide as the father of modern molecular spectroscopy, and in 1971 won the Nobel prize in chemistry "For his contributions to the knowledge of electronic structure and geometry of molecules, especially free radicals."

À l’université de la Saskatchewan, il est nommé professeur-chercheur de physique. En 1948, il entre au Conseil National de Recherches à Ottawa où il sera Directeur de la physique de 1949 à 1969. Il est connu mondialement comme le père de la spectroscopie moléculaire moderne et remporte en 1971 le prix Nobel de chimie « Pour sa contribution à la connaissance de la structure électronique et de la géométrie des molécules, surtout des radicaux libres ».
