Poet's Pathway

Le Croquis
Alfred Garneau (1836-1904)

Puis, sous un rayon d’or d’un moment retenue;

The following is a translation of the above poem:

The sketch
Alfred Garneau (1836-1904)

I was looking for dawn, a little-known flower,
Pale girl from the woods and secret brooks,
Crystal sources with murmuring waters
Chained my steps and surprised my sight,
Then, under a golden ray of a restrained moment;
She laughed in the sky between her brown reeds!

And as I was inclining some mutinous stems,
Without noise, the ear open to the Argentinean rumors,
Like the sighs of a mysterious lute,
Suddenly, sliding towards me on his worried wing
Through the twigs, sweet and leaning his head,
A nightingale came to drink at the harmonious flow.

The poet's Pathway honours Canada's poets, especially Ottawa's historic poets, and the lands that inspired them. It memorializes the literary Heritage of the Confederation poets and francophone poets of the time –– the earliest voices of our distinctive Canadian tradition.
