A brass memorial plaque to Rear Admiral Stuart Latham Bateson and his wife in St Mary Magdalene & St Andrew's church, Ridlington.

The inscription reads -

In memory of
Rear Admiral
Stuart Latham Bateson

CB. CBE. DI
1898 - 1980
and of
Marie Elphinstone Bateson
1901 - 1985
his wife
They lived in this parish and worshoped in this church
for their last 33 years together


After he was invalided from the Navy in 1951 as the Director of its
Electrical Branch, he became Secretary and later Chairman of the
Rutland Historic Churches Preservation Trust Commissioner of the
Rutland Scouts a High Sheriff of Rutland and Deputy Lieutenant for
Rutland (later Leicestershire) Vice-Lieutenant for Rutland 1963 - 1972.

Shortly before 1700 hours, HMS Ajax (Capt. S.L. Bateson, RN), departed Alexandria for Port Said. She was escorted until 2003 hours by the destroyers HMS Hotspur (Lt. T.D. Herrick, DSC, RN) and HrMs Isaac Sweers (Cdr. W. Harmsen, RNN). The destroyers then returned to Alexandria where they arrived later the same day.
