The Woonasquatucket River Watershed Council restoration of the Woonasquatucket River Greenway includes many artistic projects. A series of themed utility boxes run the length of Promenade Street in downtown Providence, Rhode Island. Each one has a solid brown background and is painted with a consistent flora and fauna motif using a specific color palate of yellow, pink, green, and blue with white highlights.

This box is at 301 Promenade Street at the intersection with Kinsley Avenue. The south and east sides are decorated; the north and west sides and the top are plain brown. A pair of blue fish and a pink crawfish are featured. Painted on the south side are a Woony River Greenway logo -- a stylized green "WRG" monogram on a white circle -- at the upper left and the artist signature and date -- DARREL PERKINS -- along the bottom edge.

About the artist:
Darrel Perkins is a Rhode Island-based illustrator and printmaker. Human form and portraiture, handmade typography and bold patterns are often the focus of his work. Linocuts are his go to media, but he also incorporates drawing, intaglio, painting, screen printing, and wood carving in his practice.

Electrical Box Murals in Providence
August 25, 2018

Throughout this spring and summer, I have worked with the Woonasquatucket River Watershed Council to design and paint fourteen murals on electrical boxes along the river running from downtown to Olneyville in Providence. It's part of a massive plan to beautify the area once ruined by textile factory pollution. The river greenway now has parks, bike lanes, cleaner water, and murals to improve the surrounding community.

My commission was to work within their color and logo branding while implementing plants and animals native to the river ecosystem. I'm proud to be a part of this great project!

Fred Lippitt started the Woony River Greenway project in 1993, with sights set mainly on the most undserserved and impoverished Providence neighborhood of Olneyville. It has grown to include adjacent industrial lands and transformed into a single, linear park that includes:

  • Seven miles of urban bike path
  • Connection from Waterplace Park, Providence to Lyman Avenue, Johnston
  • Three linked municipalities: Providence, Johnston, and North Smithfield
  • More than seven parks and gateways
  • 52 acres of restored land
  • Art by local artists along the Greenway
