His Findagrave page indicates that he was a superintendent of county roads in Anderson County, and was murdered near the Palestine City Cemetery for some reason other than robbery.

There are a few Woodmen of the World monuments like this here in the cemetery. This variety is uncommon, and the well-detailed log atop the monument is a separate piece not part of the main headstone. The family name, "Tippen", is on the reverse plinth, and below a very faded Woodmen of the World emblem is:
