La grande croix lumineuse fait partie du paysage de la ville de Gatineau depuis maintenant plus de 60 ans. L’idée de son installation à Hull remonte au 4 juillet 1938 lorsqu’Oscar Duquette proposa au conseil municipal l’implantation de cette croix liée à son projet d’embellissement de la ville. En 1949, le comité réuni de nouveau confia la réalisation du projet à la Société Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Hull et du Nord de l’Outaouais qui permit l’installation de la croix lumineuse d’une hauteur de 9,4 m à son emplacement précédemment désigné. L’inauguration eut lieu le 25 juin 1950 lors de la journée de clôture des célébrations du 75e anniversaire de l’incorporation de la municipalité et du 150e anniversaire de la fondation de la Ville de Hull où près de 12 000 personnes prenaient part à la longue procession présidée par l’archevêque d’Ottawa, monseigneur Alexandre Vachon.

Avec les années, la croissance des arbres dans les environs de la croix lumineuse amenuisait la visibilité du monument.
