The history of the city of Susa ( Segusio ) begins with the conquering of the Alps by Augustus. It is the capital of King Cottius who, vanquished, becomes the Emperor's ally under the name of Caius Julius Cottius and is entrusted with maintaining the route which connected Italy to Gaul by Montgenèvre ( Alpes Cottiæ ).
