A fire on a houseboat kills Leslie Whittaker, an antiquarian book dealer. The fore spread to an adjacent house boat killing Christina Aspern, a student. In Whittaker’s boat is found £20,000 and a forged Turner painting. The fire investigator concludes that the fire is arson.

Christina’s flat mate tells Banks that she should have been at her father’s 60th birthday party, but they had had a falling out. Christina was threatening to report her father to the police. The plot thickens when Christina’s step mother is seen on CCTV near the houseboat on the night in question. Further, Christina’s flatmate is a gifted artist that forged the Turner painting.

Banks discovers that Whittaker had a partner, artist, Jack McMahon. When Banks sees him at his cottage McMahon challenges Banks with a shotgun, claiming he is in fear of a man called Morrison. Some time later McMahon is found in his burnt out cottage, in a fire similar to the houseboat fire.

Annie Cabbot seeks an expert opinion from Mark Keane an art historian at The Northern Art Gallery. Cabbot and Keane have a one night stand. Meanwhile Banks confronts Dr Patrick Aspern, Christina’s father. He hits a brick wall with Dr Aspern until a document is found in Christina’s clothing implicating Dr Aspern in an under age abortion. Banks guesses that the abortion was carried out on Dr Aspern’s young wife. With a little persuasion he convinces Dr Aspern’s wife to give evidence against him.

Whilst Banks closes down one case, Cabbot realises that Whittaker, McMahon and Morrison were passing off fake pictures at auction. She realises that the auction houses would need authentication of the pictures and that Keane has done the authentications. She confronts Keane and gets him to ring Morrison. Unknown to her Keane and Morrison are one and the same. Keane drugs Cabbot’s coffee and sets about rigging his flat to burn down with Cabbot inside. Banks has come to the same conclusion as Cabbot and arrives just in time to save Cabbot from the flames. He does, however, have to let Keane escape in order to get to Cabbot in time.
