From just inside the gate, go a little south and you'll find the first burial in the cemetery, protected by a few trees. Will Pankney, a cowboy for the Shoenail Ranch, was shot and killed in 1887 in an argument with a co-worker. Initially buried in an unmarked grave, Mr. Pankney's story is told on the marble headstone that now stands here.
