The DowntownTX website is a great resource in providing some background, as the National Register's Nomination Form says little other than noting this one as a contributor (as property #7) and capturing it (as Plaza Furniture) in photo #54. It replaced whatever was there before the Great Fire of 1916, and these are some past occupants:

1936-57 - McLellan Stores Company (department store)
1959-65 - McCrory McLellan Stores Corp. (variety store)
1967-77 - McCrory McLellan Green, Inc. (variety store)
1978-84 - Huggins Furniture Company
1985-97 - Plaza Furniture
1999-2000 - Antique Clocks & Chiropractic Mattress Center

Note the plaque on the building says "Conway-Wright" and not "Conway-Short" when referring to the 1917 occupant.
