We never cease to be amazed at what we find in rural Oklahoma. We stopped in this small town of about 180 residents, and found it full and rich with history, carefully preserved by caring citizens.
This mural was painted in 2007 by Bob Palmer and his mural students at UCO. They have painted countless murals throughout Oklahoma and the country, mostly documenting history. This is painted on the north side of a two-story brick building on the southwest corner of Main and 7th, which appears to have been a gymnasium at one time. The mural states "BESSIE Est. 1903."
Scenes shown on the mural include the original two-story brick school from 1916, a fire truck, the depot, a locomotive, the downtown area, grain elevator and Peace Lutheran Church. This agricultural town was originally named for the Blackwell, Enid and Southwestern Railroad.
