Da der Dortmund-Ems-Kanal für den Verkehr mit Großmotorgüterschiffen
ausgebaut wurde war die Brückenlänge der alten Schlieker-Brücke nicht mehr ausreichend.
Daher wurde im Jahr 2001 mit dem Bau der neuen Brücke begonnen.
Diese wurde im Jahr 2002 fertiggestellt.
Des weiteren wurde die Durchfahrtshöhe um etwa 80 cm vergrößert.
Die alte Schlieker-Brücke mit einem Gesamtgewicht von 357 t wurde am Freitag den 29.11.2002 abgebrochen.
