The compass rose, that is about five metres in diameter, is made from polished marble. The four colours of stone used give a 3D effect, the central rose in the compass extends its central ‘rhumb lines’ out for each compass point which connect with a map in the atrium and out onto the outdoor plaza. Around the compass there are quotations from works by Belfast born poet Thomas Carnduff, known as the ‘Shipyard Poet’.
