The Loughborough SA Church is a mainstream Christian Church with a strong desire to reach out into the local community.
"The centre in Burleigh Road, which is the former Elim Church, replaces the charity’s base at The Rushes which it had occupied for nearly 130 years.
The charity says it wanted to expand its community activities and the new base provides the perfect setting to offer a skittle club, film evenings, art and aerobic classes for locals to enjoy.
It also helps The Salvation Army expand its work in helping the elderly, vulnerable and homeless.
The new base provides shower facilities for the disabled and elderly as well as a laundrette service for the homeless. It also has a far larger kitchen and clothing room to provide meals and fresh clothes to those seeking shelter. Other facilities include a counselling room, a quiet room, the main church hall, and an upstairs room which is currently being used by drug and alcohol treatment service Swanswell.
Major Anita Purkiss, from the Salvation Army, told the Echo: “
We are opening up one of the rooms, Monday to Friday, 10am until 2pm, for light refreshments and wi-fi, so people can come in and work or meet their friends.
“We also have a brand new pool table and Wii. We want people to use this as a comfortable space and do more for the community, and the last building was restricting us.
“There are a lot of people in communities today that are isolated and we want to provide a safe place for them.
“Also one of the reasons for moving is that our Sunday congregation is growing.”"
