This is a gasoline powered Maytag Washer. It was developed by the Maytag company in 1915 to meet the needs of rural families far from a source of electricity. In 1924 there were a few farm families in the SanTan valley, making a living growing cotton and alfalfa 35 miles southeast of Phoenix. This washing machine would have been a significant improvement over a hand cranked tub. The washer is located in the SanTan Historical Society Museum in the historic Rittenhouse Elementary School. The museum is open only on Saturday from 9-5. There is no admission charge.
