La place triangulaire sur laquelle est édifiée cette fontaine octogonale est fort ancienne, apparrue lors du quatrième agrandissement de la ville au début du 15e siècle.
L'arrivée de l'eau ne peut en être datée mais une fontaine y existait avant 1524 puisque cette année-là, un citoyen d'Aix refusant de se soumettre aux troupes de Charles Quint y fut pendu à l'un des trois ormeaux.
L'arbre mourut inexplicablement et la place y trouva son nom.
La fontaine actuelle est aussi difficile à dater. Supprimée en 1625 car le puits qui l'alimentait était contaminé, elle fut rétablie en 1632, sans que l'on puisse dire si ses éléments remontent à cette époque ou au règne de Louis XVI.
les arbres actuels sont des érables et son eau vient du réseau de la ville.

The triangular square on which this octagonal fountain is built is very old, having appeared during the fourth expansion of the city at the beginning of the 15th century.
