Thirteen slender stainless steel birch trees, measuring 7.3 metres tall, are located on the north end of the Cyrville Station platform surrounded by prairie grasses.
“For thousands of years, indigenous peoples have used the bark from birch trees to build their canoes. They traveled on the Gatineau, Rideau and Ottawa rivers to trade, hunt and meet with family and friends. Things have not changed much.
Stand of Birch is a grouping of 13 slender birch trees at the end of a long winding river of grasses; in the canopy, branches intertwine and connect. Stand of Birch references the coming-together of the people of Ottawa as they travel across the city – linked together by its 13 Light Rail Transit stations.”

Artist’s biography
Don Maynard lives and works in Kingston. He recently won two public art competitions for Falling Star for the City of Ottawa and Wave for the City of Toronto. He is the recipient of a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant (2009). Solo exhibitions include: Tidal Mass, Cambridge Galleries, Ontario; Franken Forest, Agnes Etherington Art Centre, Kingston, Ontario and Robert McLaughlin Gallery, Oshawa, Ontario (2010); and Looks Like Rain, MacLaren Art Centre, Barrie, Ontario (2008). He was featured in CAFKA’s 2009 Biennale, Veracity, in Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario. He is represented by Newzones Gallery in Calgary, Alberta, and Sears-Peyton Gallery in New York, New York.

Treize bouleaux élancés en acier inoxydable d’une hauteur de 7,3 m ornent l’extrémité nord du quai de la station Cyrville. Les arbres sont entourés de graminées à leur pied.
« Pendant des milliers d’années, les Autochtones ont utilisé l’écorce de bouleau pour construire leurs canoës. Ils ont navigué sur les rivières Gatineau, Rideau et des Outaouais pour faire du troc, chasser et rencontrer des membres de leur famille et des amis. Les choses n’ont pas beaucoup changé. Peuplement de bouleaux représente un bosquet de treize bouleaux élancés dans le sillage d’une longue rivière sinueuse d’herbes. Les branches des arbres s’entremêlent et se rejoignent dans la canopée. Peuplement de bouleaux illustre le rapprochement qui s’opère entre les habitants d’Ottawa lorsqu’ils se déplacent dans la ville. Ils sont réunis par les treize stations du train léger sur rail. »

Biographie de l’artiste
Don Maynard vit et travaille à Kingston. Il a récemment gagné deux concours d’art public, Falling Star pour la Ville d’Ottawa et Wave pour la ville de Toronto.
