National Garden is an imaginary landscape composed of the official flowers from each Canadian province, territory and the City of Ottawa. Situated alongside the VIA Rail Station, the sculptural plaza canopy recognizes the faraway destinations that can be reached by train and acknowledges the distant places that travellers may have come from. The flowers are mementos from abroad. National Garden celebrates both the romance of travel and recognizes, through the depiction of vernacular flowers, the unique and delicate qualities of Canadian culture and the physical landscape.
Mirrored finish stainless steel panels will be integrated onto the underside of the glass canopy over the pedestrian walkway towards the station from the VIA Rail Station. The panels will have cut-outs with fold over pieces depicting various silhouettes of provincial and territorial flowers, and Ottawa's municipal flower.
Artist’s biography
Jyhling Lee is a public artist and active contributor to the cultural community. She is passionate about the socially enabling role of public art and design in place-making within the built environment. For Lee, public art and public space making are situated between the realm of art, architecture, and urban design. Common in her work is the desire to inspire the civic imagination and to enhance the human experience of a place. Through Figureground Studio, she has been involved in a wide range of projects across Ontario and the Prairies.

Jardin national est un paysage imaginaire intégrant les fleurs emblématiques de chaque province et territoire du Canada et de la Ville d’Ottawa. Située le long de la gare VIA Rail, la canopée sculptée de l’esplanade représente les destinations lointaines qu’on peut atteindre et d’où on peut revenir en train. Les fleurs évoquent des souvenirs d’ailleurs. Jardin national célèbre l’appel du voyage et reconnaît, à travers la représentation des fleurs vernaculaires, les qualités uniques et raffinées de la culture et du paysage canadiens.
Des panneaux en acier inoxydable au fini miroir seront intégrés sur la face intérieure de la canopée en verre, au-dessus de l’allée piétonnière qui mène de la station Tremblay à la gare VIA Rail. Les panneaux présenteront des formes découpées avec des pièces repliées illustrant diverses silhouettes de fleurs des provinces et des territoires ainsi que l’emblème floral de la municipalité d’Ottawa.
Biographie de l’artiste
Jyhling Lee est créatrice d’art public qui contribue activement à la communauté culturelle. Elle se passionne pour le rôle d’habilitation sociale de l’art et de la conception dans le contexte de la création d’un espace à l’intérieur d’un environnement bâti. Pour Mme Lee, l’art public et la création d’un espace public appartiennent au domaine de l’art, de l’architecture et de l’urbanisme. Dans ses œuvres, l’artiste cherche couramment à stimuler l’imagination du citoyen et à mettre en valeur l’expérience humaine d’un lieu. Par l’entremise de figureground Studio, elle a participé à une vaste gamme de projets partout en Ontario et dans les Prairies.
