The American Gold Star Mothers Memorial tree is a Blue Atlas Cedar. The marker is located in Section 35, along the main walkway from the visitor center towards the Kennedy Memorial and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
The American Gold Star Mothers Inc. traces its beginnings to 1918, when President Woodrow Wilson suggested that American mothers in mourning wear a black armband with a gold star.
The organization was named after the Gold Star that families hung in their windows in honor of the deceased veteran. After years of planning, twenty-five mothers met in Washington, D.C., on June 4, 1928, to establish the national organization, American Gold Star Mothers, Inc.
The Memorial was placed in honour of all Gold Star Mothers.
