A sculpture of a butterfly being released is an excellent choice for this spot. Behind this artwork is a large group of flowering plants, a butterfly garden.

A life size sculpture of a young girl being held by an older child. Below is an open Kerr jar, the girl is releasing a butterfly. The sculpture suggests that a cocoon was found and protected until it became a butterfly and was released.

Lifting The Human Spirit Through Sculpture
Description
Bronze sculpture of boy holding girl releasing butterflies
My sculpture, ‘New Season’, is about renewal and rebirth; the metamorphosis that promotes change. It suggests the tender care and concern that move us to help others. And finally, it recalls the inquisitiveness and exploration of youth that motivate and inspire us all.
I always sculpt from live models in order to get all that essence of life in my work. I had my oldest son Zac model for the standing figure and ‘borrowed’ my business manager’s daughter for the little girl releasing the butterflies. It was a really fun piece to sculpt as both are very fun-loving and natural models. Our kids never had sisters and it was fun watching how tender Zac interacted with Katy. It has been rewarding to see the life-size version acquired by several botanical gardens, some with specialized butterfly grounds. I enjoy watching my work find its proper home.

Texas City Bay Street Park - Thomas S. Mackey Nature Center
The Thomas S. Mackey Nature Center is a 35-acre wildlife habitat in the north section of the Park. The Center consists of nature trails and observation points where visitors can view the abundance of waterfowl, songbirds, wildlife and vegetation native to the Texas City coastline. Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts played a major role in the development of the Center, building totem poles, foot bridges and other facilities.
The Nature Center is dedicated to Eagle Scouts of the Galveston County mainland in hor of Dr. Thomas S. Mackey, an Eagle Scout and long-time Boy Scout leader in Texas City. Dr. Mackey assisted the City with the purchase of this land by the City of Texas City for the entire Bay Street Park complex. Over 400 names honoring scouts are listed on displays at each entrance to the Center.
