County of site: Warren County
Location of site: Veterans Memorial Parkway (OLD US 40), next to Denny's, Warrenton
Dedicated: November 4, 2018
The names [see gallery] on this memorial are the Men and Women who gave their lives. Most were KIA, some were MIA and never heard from again, and some died of non-combat reasons while serving during one war or another, including disease.
The local Marine Corps League is named after a Vietnam KIA. He was a local boy (Warrenton High School), and lied just a couple blocks from this memorial. Each year on his birthday, July 6th, and at Christmas the local Marine Corp Detachment hold a ceremony at his grave site in Jonesburg, MO. May family members and others, attend, as we honor our brother, Cpl Richard Scott Haymes.
It should be noted, this was begun by the local VFW..and years struggled without much movement. Then the city gave this spot, and MoDot, who owned about half of it, gave their part...then the TTVM began to gather steam.
"On Oct. 24, a crew installed bronze statues/display of a mother with her child and the Battlefield Cross, the symbol of a lost soldier, at the Tribute to Veterans Memorial in Warrenton.
"The bronze display, made by Liberty Art Works in Dutzow, is illustrative of a Gold Star family, or a family who lost a relative during wartime.
"Servicemen and servicewomen lost during wartime are exactly who will be honored at the Warren County Tribute to Veterans Memorial, which will be dedicated, at last, in an outdoor ceremony scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 4.
"The committee that has been working on the project also planned the presentation. It will include a presentation of the colors, patriotic music, guest speakers, a rifle salute and taps and more.
"The project has been about four years in the making. Every part of it has been organized by volunteers and paid for with donations from Warren County and also the surrounding counties.
"The memorial, which is located on Veterans Memorial Parkway at Market Street, will open to the public following the presentation." ~ Warrenton Record, By Kate Miller, Oct. 26, 2018
