This area of Utah has seen numerous bouts of volcanic activity. The small hills in the distance are cinder cones, ancient volcanic vents. At their base is a lava flow. Seen from a distance it is the dark band across the valley. This activity did not result from a single massive volcanic explosion but rather represents a series of minor events, small vents that create a cone of cinder and a nearby lava field. There is a pull out at the site that allows travelers to stop, read the informational sign and enjoy the lava from a distance.
