The Jesuit Church of Jézus Szíve (Sacred Heart) in Városmajor is an outstanding piece of 20th-century Bauhaus architecture justifiably categorised as a protected monument. Considered too modern at the time of its consecration in 1933 – the congregation expressed its disapproval – Budapest’s first reinforced-concrete church has since become a source of local pride. A statue of the Virgin Mary stands where a shell hit in 1942. The church holds Saturday mass in English at 5pm and confession in English is also possible from 4.30pm – there’s an active Catholic community there. The Sacred Heart Church is a popular setting for weddings and an architectural must-see.
