[FR] "Voici deux témoignages concernant les évènements qui se sont passés le 12 août 1944 à Sanxay. Ce jour là, une colonne allemande de répression des maquis, partie de Niort, occupa dans l’après-midi le village de Sanxay à la recherche des chefs et des résistants du maquis Maurice, prenant les hommes en otages et menaçant le village de représailles. La population éprouva de longues heures d’angoisse, que la connaissance du drame d’Oradour-sur-Glane quelques semaines plus tôt accentuait. Les troupes allemandes repartirent le soir même pour Niort, sans exactions majeures mais en emmenant des suspects et des otages qui furent libérés environ deux semaines plus tard lors du départ définitif des troupes allemandes.
Sur cet évènement il existe à ce jour deux témoignages connus. L’un a été écrit aussitôt après les faits, trois mois plus tard : il s’agit du rapport rédigé pour l’évêque de Poitiers par le curé de Sanxay, le père François Delavault (archives historiques de l’évêché de Poitiers). Placé avec le maire au cœur de l’évènement, il relate dans son rapport l’ensemble des évènements de l’été 44. Le second, sous la forme d’une conférence prononcée 70 ans plus tard, est le témoignage d’un jeune homme de 15 ans et demi en 1944, M. Gérard Fournier.
La lecture de ces deux documents montre à l’évidence, malgré l’écart de temps (70 ans) qui sépare les deux témoignages de grandes concordances dans le récit des faits, les textes se complétant même sur de nombreux points. Il reste cependant une discordance majeure : le récit du dénouement du drame. Le père Delavault placé au cœur de l’action avec le maire attribue la décision d’épargner la population au commandant de l’unité allemande présent sur place, tandis que M. Gérard Fournier attribue, lui, cette décision à l’arrivée inopinée d’un officier supérieur allemand, qui serait arrivé en automobile au moment crucial pour arrêter par son autorité le massacre qui allait s’accomplir."

That day, a German column of repression of the maquis, part of Niort, occupied in the afternoon the village of Sanxay in search of the leaders and resistance of the maquis Maurice, taking the men hostage and threatening the village of retaliation . The population experienced long hours of anguish, which the knowledge of the drama of Oradour-sur-Glane a few weeks earlier accentuated. The German troops left the same evening for Niort, without major abuses but bringing suspects and hostages who were released about two weeks later when the final departure of German troops.
On this event there are currently two known testimonials. One was written immediately after the events, three months later: this is the report written for the bishop of Poitiers by the priest of Sanxay, Father François Delavault (historical archives of the bishopric of Poitiers). Placed with the mayor at the heart of the event, he reports in his report all the events of the summer of 44. The second, in the form of a lecture pronounced 70 years later, is the testimony of a young man 15-year-old man in 1944, Mr. Gérard Fournier.
The reading of these two documents shows clearly, despite the time difference (70 years) between the two testimonies of great concordances in the narrative of the facts, the texts complementing each other on many points. However, there remains a major discordance: the story of the outcome of the tragedy. Father Delavault, who is at the heart of the action with the mayor, attributes the decision to spare the population to the commander of the German unit present on the spot, while Gérard Fournier attributes this decision to him on the unexpected arrival of a senior German officer, who would have arrived by car at the crucial moment to stop by his authority the massacre that was going to be accomplished."
