Some metro women are giving back to their community in a unique way. We've got your back with how an often overlooked item in your dresser could make a big difference to a woman in need.
"I love seeing these ones with tags," said Sammye Cravens as she sorted through a giant box of bras.
Cravens calls herself a "BMW."
"A BMW is a bra ministry worker," she said.
Cravens and Debbi Marshall are part of the group of women from her their church filling a need they saw around the metro.
"Most everyone has bras at home that don't fit anymore or they just don't like," said Marshall.
"Bras are a symbol of self esteem," said Cravens. "Those who don't have bras or can't afford bras really need something to make them feel better."
The women hold drives all throughout the year. Friday's haul, collected with the help of Edmond daycare My Small Wonders, totaled more than 400 bra donations.
Marshall said, "We're going to have to do a lot of counting."
Counting. And sorting. Then the bras will go to a number of local organizations that serve women.
"We distribute to many places," said Cravens. "We don't want them sold, we just want them donated to someone who needs them."
Even bras that are old and worn out won't go to waste. They may be able to help turtles.
"In North Carolina, there's a turtle rescue group that helps turtles with broken shells," said Marshall. "And the hooks and eyes are used to glue onto the turtle's back, and they wire the shell together."
Friday's donations are among more than a thousand they've collected since the bra ministry workers started around a year ago. It's a simple item, that's giving support in more ways than one.
