The Trevi Fountain (Italian: Fontana di Trevi) was designed by Italian architect Nicola Salvi and completed by Giuseppe Pannini and several others, between 1732 and 1762. Standing 26.3 metres (86 ft) high and 49.15 metres (161.3 ft) wide, it is the largest Baroque fountain in Rome. The fountain has appeared in several notable films, including Roman Holiday, Federico Fellini's La Dolce Vita, the eponymous Three Coins in the Fountain, The Lizzie McGuire Movie, and Sabrina Goes to Rome.
In the middle of the triumphal arch, between the two central statues, surmounted by an imposing coat of arms of Pope Clement XII supported by two representations of Fame by Paolo Benaglia, there is the great commemorative-inauguration inscription that the pontiff wanted to put a little hastily:
(LA)
«CLEMENS XII PONT MAX
AQVAM VIRGINEM
COPIA ET SALVBRITATE COMMENDATAM
CVLTV MAGNIFICENT ORNAVIT
YEAR DOMINI MDCCXXXV PONTIF VI»
(EN)
"In the year of the Lord 1735, sixth of his pontificate, Clement XII PM adorned the virgin aqueduct, celebrated for its [abundance] and healthiness, with a marvelous work."
