Marcel Braitstein

Né en Belgique, Marcel Braitstein émigre au Canada en 1951. Diplômé de l’École des beaux-arts de Montréal (1953 à 1959), il poursuit ses études au Mexique puis en Europe. En 1959, il remporte le Concours artistique de la Province de Québec. Professeur à l’Université du Québec à Montréal de 1969 à 1998, il sera également directeur du département d’arts visuels de 1986 à 1991. Membre de l’Académie Royale des Arts du Canada, il est l’auteur de quelques publications : Enfant traqué, enfant caché (1995), Les Mystères de l’île de Saber (1998), Saber dans la jungle de l’Antarctique (2000) et Nocturnes (2003), un livre d’artiste regroupant poèmes et photos. Son travail en sculpture, qui s’articule autour de la représentation de figures anthropomorphiques ou animalières, est investi d’une portée universelle en portant une réflexion sur la condition humaine à travers des thèmes tels que la mort, la destruction et la guerre. Son Oiseau sur colonne, par exemple, en témoigne indéniablement avec ses ailes déployées et son bec ouvert sur sa proie, évoquant la violence d’un monde sans pitié.

Born in Belgium, Marcel Braitstein immigrated to Canada in 1951. A graduate of the Montreal School of Fine Arts (1953-1959), he continued his studies in Mexico and then in Europe. In 1959, he won the Quebec Art Competition. Professor at the University of Quebec in Montreal from 1969 to 1998, he will also be director of the visual arts department from 1986 to 1991. Member of the Royal Academy of Arts of Canada, he is the author of some publications: Child hunted, hidden child (1995), The Mysteries of Saber Island (1998), Saber in the Antarctic Jungle (2000) and Nocturnes (2003), an artist's book gathering poems and photos. His work in sculpture, which revolves around the representation of anthropomorphic or animal figures, is invested with a universal scope by reflecting on the human condition through themes such as death, destruction and war. His Bird on Column, for example, testifies undeniably with its outstretched wings and beak open on its prey, evoking the violence of a world without mercy.
