This beautiful example of a New England “Little Red Schoolhouse” was originally built in 1810, purchased by Helen O. Storrow, and transferred from Whatley, MA to the Storrowton Village Museum on the grounds of the Eastern States Exposition in 1928. The red brick building features a blackboards on all four walls, a bell tower, an attached woodshed, and a privy.

The North Center School is home to many children’s educational programs and open during Storrowton Village events and tours. The original desks are still in use in the school and visitors will find the carved initials of generations of schoolchildren.

In 19th century New England, many schools were only one room with one teacher and 20-50 students from age 3 to age 18. A wood fired cast iron stove was used for heating. Everyone used different textbooks as and every student would be to be working on something different. Since school supplies were limited, they were always brought from home.
