"And this, our life ... finds tongues in trees ... sermons in stones, and good in everything" ~ Shakespeare ~

The full quote, from As You Like It is
"And this our life, exempt from public haunt,
Finds tongues in trees, books in the running brooks,
Sermons in stones, and good in everything."
(II.i.15–17)

According to SparkNotes (https://www.sparknotes.com/shakespeare/asyoulikeit/quotes/)

Shakespeare has Duke Senior speak these lines to establish the “pastoral mode of the play”. Shakespeare is showing the differences between the dangers of the court in the city and the safety of the Forest of Ardenne (Often believed to be the Forest of Arden around Stratford-upon-Avon, but possibly the Ardennes in France).

In the woods the backstabbing of life at court are left behind and the simple country life is ready to pass on it’s valuable teachings. “Shakespeare highlights the educational, edifying, and enlightening nature of this foray into the woods by employing language that invokes the classroom, the library, and the church:”

A fitting quote and appropriate imagery for the grassy and tree filled quad in the center of the university campus.
