The sculpture features four 8' tall angels ascending and descending a ladder reaching up into heaven, illustrating the biblical account of Jacob’s dream from Genesis 28. Jacob and Esau were twins. Esau was the first born and should have received his father's blessing. When Jacob was blessed instead, he fled in fear of his brother's anger.

Wikipedia

"Jacob's Ladder is a ladder leading to heaven that was featured in a dream the biblical Patriarch Jacob had during his flight from his brother Esau in the Book of Genesis.
