This pillar is situated on top of a barely discernible rise at only 28 metres, overlooking the Firth of Forth which is only a hundred yards away or so, halfway between the villages of St Monans and Elie. It stands along the edge of a field between the A917 road and the Fife Coastal Path and also close to the site of the railway line that once ran along the coast. The route to the pillar has been eased by the construction of a road that runs alongside the fence from the A917. The pillar is in good condition with the best views south over the water.

STEEPNESS: Virtually none.

TERRAIN: Along tarmac from the A917 to the north, but awkward long grass and scrub from the coastal path.

ACCESSIBILITY: Formerly across the edge of the field, but now the new road on the other side of the fence comes within a few yards and only requires a climbing of the fence (fortunately not barbed-wire). It is around the same distance from the coastal path but more difficult to reach.

NAVIGATION: The road signed 'Catchpenny, Private Road' lies on the A917 almost equidistant from Elie and St Monans and just beyond Ardross Farm Shop. NB a pavement runs along this stretch of the road. The pillar is around a hundred yards or so from the A917. From the Coastal Path the old railway line has to be crossed and navigation is more difficult.

DANGER: The route from the coastal path requires fence climbing and awkward terrain to be crossed via the old railway bed.

Type of Trigpoint: Triangulation Pillar
