Zu den schönsten Bürgerhäusern Zittaus zählt das große Eckhaus Bautzner Straße/Kirchstraße, auch "Alte Post" oder "Bessersches Haus" genannt.
Erbauer und Besitzer des Barockhauses war der verdienstvolle Kaufmann Carl Christian Besser. Mitte des 18. Jahrhunderts gehörte er zu den reichsten und aktivsten Handelsherren der Stadt, mit erfolgreichen Geschäftsbeziehungen auch bis nach England. Im Jahr 1745 ließ er den Grundstein zu seinem Wohnhaus legen. Die Hausfronten sind recht schmucklos, dafür wurden das barocke Portal mit mehrfachen Pfeilern (Pilastern) gerahmt und die Eckerker außerordentlich schön gestaltet. Rechts und links des Gesimses an den Erker angelehnt, befinden sich zwei lebensgroße Plastiken, Mars und Minerva, als Sinnbilder für Krieg und Frieden. Einige Jahre wurde das "Bessersche Haus" als Post und später als Restaurant "Zur Post" genutzt, danach wurde es Geschäftshaus.
Wegen seiner baugeschichtlichen, ortsgeschichtlichen und kunstgeschichtlichen Bedeutung steht der straßenbildprägender Barockbau unter Denkmalschutz (Landesamt für Denkmalpflege Sachsen, Objekt Nr. 09270483).
One of the most beautiful town houses in Zittau is the large corner building Bautzner Straße/Kirchstraße, also known as the "Alte Post" or "Bessersches Haus".
Builder and owner of the baroque house was the meritorious merchant Carl Christian Besser. In the middle of the 18th century he belonged to the richest and most active merchants of the city, with successful business relations even to England. In 1745 the foundation stone for his house was laid. The house façades are quite unadorned, but the baroque portal was framed with multiple pillars (pilasters) and the corner oriels were extraordinarily beautifully designed. To the right and left of the cornice, leaning against the oriel, are two life-size sculptures, Mars and Minerva, as symbols of war and peace. For some years the "Bessersche Haus" was used as a post office and later as a restaurant "Zur Post", afterwards it became a business building.
Because of its significance in terms of building history, local history and art history, the baroque building that characterises the street scene is under monument protection (Landesamt für Denkmalpflege Sachsen, object no. 09270483).
