In Erfurt, Andreasstraße was synonymous with the Stasi (state security). Here was the district administration of the MfS (Ministry of State Security) housed in today's police headquarters. Even as the civic movement had long since shifted their protest from the churches to the streets, the fight against the "counterrevolution" was planned here. The Erfurt thursday demonstrations had meanwhile reached their first climax on October 26, 1989, when 40,000 people loudly voiced their criticism of the circumstances in the cathedral square. On 10 and 11 November, mayor Rosemarie Seibert and SED district chief Gerhard Müller resigned. With the fall of the Berlin Wall on 9 November, the fate of the GDR seemed to have been sealed anyway.
And yet the MfS facilities remained unmolested for the time being. Only intrepid Erfurt citizens made clear the way here, finally "free from the shackles of fear", as it says on the memorial plaque in the Andreasstraße. Here took place on 4 December 1989, the first occupation of a Stasi district administration, which unfolded GDR-wide signal effect.
