Sainte-Macrine , whose feast is celebrated on July 6, was formerly in great veneration in the marshes bordering Sèvre Niortaise and Vendée. Its history, mixed with that of Sainte-Pezenne and Sainte-Colombe, is unfortunately somewhat confused, and it is only relied on the faith of the simple local tradition that it has was collected by the Abbé Picard, parish priest of Magné, author of a notice on the Lives of Sainte-Macrine de Magné and Sainte-Pezenne. Sainte-Macrine, according to the Bollandists, was also referred to as Materna, Matrina. Macrine and Pezenne were two virgins whom the Petits Bollandistes lived in the eighth century, but which, according to Dom Chamard, were contemporary with the fourth (16). Originating from Spain, according to some hagiographers, they would have been born, according to others, in the former Armorica or Britain.

In any case, everyone agrees to admit that the two girls, aged twenty years and driven out of their country by the persecution, had come to seek refuge on the banks of the Sèvre Niortaise, at the the woods near the town of Niort, in a wild corner where, shortly after, they were joined by Colombe, sister of Macrine.

Researches made in the famous and voluminous martyrology of the Bollandists, about Sainte-Pezenne, only made the life of Sainte-Macrine meet there incidentally, because it was associated early with his own. .
The critics, in a critical note, believe that this life was written around the middle of the eleventh century, by some monks of the monastery of Saint-Maixent or neighboring countries, and according to a popular tradition, rather than on historical documents.
Sainte-Pezenne would have died around the year 727.

Son histoire, mêlée à celle de Sainte-Pezenne et de Sainte-Colombe, est malheureusement quelque peu confuse, et ce n’est guère qu’appuyée sur la foi de la simple tradition locale qu’elle a été recueillie par M. l’abbé Picard, curé de Magné, auteur d’une Notice sur les Vies de Sainte-Macrine de Magné et de Sainte-Pezenne. En tout cas, tout le monde est d’accord pour admettre que les deux jeunes filles, âgées d’une vingtaine d’années et chassées de leur pays par la persécution, étaient venues chercher un refuge sur les bords de la Sèvre Niortaise, au milieu des bois voisins de la ville de Niort, dans un coin sauvage où, peu après, elles avaient été jointes par Colombe, sœur de Macrine.

Des recherches faites dans le célèbre et volumineux martyrologe des Bollandistes, au sujet de Sainte-Pezenne, n’y ont fait rencontrer la vie de Sainte-Macrine qu’incidemment, parce qu’elle fut associée de bonne heure à la sienne.
Les rédacteurs, dans une note critique, pensent que cette vie fut écrite vers le milieu du XIe siècle, par quelque religieux du monastère de Saint-Maixent ou des contrées voisines, et d’après une tradition populaire, plutôt que sur des documents historiques.
Sainte-Pezenne serait morte vers l’an 727.
