A utility box at the intersection of Wickenden and South Main Streets in the Fox Point neighborhood of Providence, Rhode Island is hand painted with a portrait of the artist Frida Kahlo. It appears to be based on the Nickolas Muray portrait photograph, Frida on Bench (1939).
The portrait is on the north side of the box and is clearly visible to the many travelers along Wickenden Street. The side includes the phrase: "PROVIDENCE THE CREATIVE CAPITAL" in red letters at the top right corner. This labels it as part of the Art Transformer Project, organized by the City of Providence Department of Art, Culture, + Tourism (AC+T).
The name YSANEL TORRES is painted in red on both the east and west sides. THANKS AS220! is painted in red below the artist's name on west side. [AS220 is a non-profit community arts organization in Providence.]
A portrait of Coretta Scott King is painted on the south side of the box. Striking a pensive pose, she is presented in a blue dress with white polka dots.
The north and west sides have a light blue background; the south and east are light purple. Outlined white tear drop shapes are incorporated throughout the background. A solid red border is around the top edge of the box's case.
