Family History -
Charles Alfred was the youngest surviving child of Francis Hall and his wife Priscilla nee Henson.
His father was born in 1837 in Southwell and his mother Priscilla Henson in Nottingham in 1848. They were married in 1872 (J/F/M Nottingham) and had ten children of whom two did not survive infancy/childhood. Their surviving children were: Ann Elizabeth (Anne/Annie) b. 1872 (J/A/S Southwell), Florence Eliza (Florrie) b. 20 February 1874 (J/F/M Southwell), John Henson b. 1875 (O/N/D Southwell), Robert b. 1877 (A/M/J Southwell), Francis b. 24 August 1879 (J/A/S Southwell), Arthur Lawrence birth registered 1884 (J/F/M Southwell), Kate Helen (Nellie) b. 8 August 1888 (J/A/S Southwell) and Charles Alfred b. 1890 (A/M/J Southwell). All the children were born in Southwell.
Francis was a licensed victualler and in 1881 was licensee of the Newcastle Arms, Station Street, Nottingham. In the premises on the night of the census were his wife Priscilla (33) and their five children Ann (8), Florence (6), John (5), Robert (3) and Francis (1). Also in the household was John Hall (17) an ostler.
Francis (54) and Priscilla (43) were in the same licensed premises in 1891. Their son John was not in the household on the night of the census, but their other seven children were with their parents: Annie (18), Florence (17), Robert (14), Francis (11), Arthur (7), Kate (2) and Charles (11 months).
Francis (64) was still licensee of the Newcastle Arms in 1901. Only six of Francis and Priscilla's children were in the household on the night of the census: Ann (28), Florence (27), Robert (24) a coal merchant, Arthur (18) a railway clerk, Kate (12) and Charles (10).
However, by 1911 Francis (74) was licensee of the Cross Keys, Upton, Nottinghamshire. He and Priscilla (63) were living there with three of their children, Ann (38) and Kate (22) who were both working as milliners, and Charles who was assisting in the business.
Francis died on 20 February 1916 aged 79 and his wife Priscilla on 24 September 1937 aged 89; both are buried in Upton St Peter churchyard.
Of Charles' siblings:
Ann Elizabeth has not been positively traced after 1911 but may have died in 1917 (Ann Hall, 1917/March Basford, aged 44).
Florence Eliza married John George Wigginton and in 1911 they were living at 20 Florence Road, Wood Green North, Middlesex. John (37) was born in Croydon (27 September 1873) and was a shop assistant (jeweller). He and Florence (37) had one child, Phyllis Henson (4 b. 30 June 1906). They were to have at least two more children, John b. 1914 and Muriel b. 1916. In 1939 at the time of the national register, they were still living in Wood Green and John was still working as a shop assistant (jeweller); their children Phyllis, John and Muriel were also in the household. Florence died in 1961 (December Edmonton Essex).
John Henson married in 1904 (A/M/J Nottingham) and served in the Army Service Corps (S/388644) previously R57571 Private Notts & Derby Regiment. He died on 23 October 1963 (December Nottingham).
Robert married Mary Jane Hurt in 1902 (J/A/S Southwell). In 1911 he was licensee of the Newcastle Arms, Southwell. He and Mary Jane (30 b. Eakring, Notts), had four children; Fred Cecil (8), Olive (6), Arthur Eric (3) and Sydney (2), who had all been born in Southwell. Also in the household were two live-in servants; Elizabeth Hand (29) and Lucy Ulyatt (14, b. Southwell). Robert died in 1955 (September Southwell).
Francis appears from various documents to have taken the name 'Francis Hall Hall'. He married Sarah Hall on 10 February 1904 at Farnworth near Prescot, Lancashire. In 1911 Francis (31) a railway clerk, and Sarah (36 b. Widnes, Lancashire) were living at 63 Windsor Road, Fairfield, Buxton, with their two children Mabel Henson (6, bap. Fairfield 15 January 1905) and Frank (4). At the time of the national register in 1939 Francis and Sarah were still living in Buxton; Francis was a retired chief railway clerk. He died in 1966 (September Chapel-en-le-Frith).
Arthur Lawrence joined the Midland Railway at Nottingham Station as a junior parcels clerk in 1899. He married Annie Elizabeth Trueman at Upton St Peter on 15 April 1909. Arthur and Annie (31, b. Upton) were living at 63 Brookhill Street, Stapleford, in 1911; Arthur was still working as a railway clerk. The couple had two sons, Rex Trueman b. 13 February 1914 and Wilfred Arthur b. 3 November 1915. Arthur attested on 15 January 1915 (044623 Army Service Corps). He was promoted sergeant on 23 August 1915 and then served in France from 24 December 1916. Arthur was discharged to 63 Brookhill Street, Stapleford in June 1919. He died on 25 August 1957 (September Basford)
Kate Helen married Richard W Coppock (b. 1 January 1889) in 1913 (J/A/S Southwell). In 1916 at the time of her brother Charles' death, they were living at 30 Crosby Road, West Bridgford, Nottingham. They were still living in Nottingham in 1939 at the time of the national register; Kate and Richard, a general rate and rents superintendent for Nottingham Corporation, were living with their daughter Marjorie H (b. 3 March 1917) although according to the details on Kate's gravestone they also had a son, Andrew. Kate died on 19 October 1954 aged 66 and was buried in Upton St Peter churchyard.
