"The belfry of Nevers was built at the end of the 14th century under Count Philippe de Bourgogne, in the heart of the merchants quarter.It had a ground floor converted into halls for butchers, topped with rooms for the bailiwick, charged to do justice for the count.
Above was the tower, materializing the growing power of the inhabitants represented by the aldermen. On top of it were of course the clock (at the time a sundial) and the bell that announced the opening and closing of the gates of the city, in addition to clocking the life of field work.
Somewhere to the top of the tower was also a lodge specially set up for a watchman whose role was to report any fire or possible looters arising on the horizon. "
The clock dates from the 15th century, it measures about 1.50m in diameter, the figures are Roman numerals.

" Le beffroi de Nevers fut construit à la fin du XIVe siècle sous le comte Philippe de Bourgogne, au coeur du quartier des marchands. Il possédait un rez-de-chaussée aménagé en halles pour les bouchers, surmonté de salles pour le bailliage, chargé de rendre la justice pour le comte.
Au-dessus s'élevait la tour, matérialisant le pouvoir croissant des habitants représentés par les échevins. En haut de celle-ci se trouvaient bien sûr l'horloge (à l'époque un cadran solaire) et la cloche qui annonçait l'ouverture et la fermeture des portes de la ville, en plus de cadencer la vie des travaux des champs.
Quelque part vers le sommet de la tour devait aussi se trouver une loge spécialement disposée pour un guetteur dont le rôle consistait à signaler tout feu ou d'éventuels pillards surgissant à l'horizon. "
L'Horloge date du XVème siècle, elle mesure environ 1.50m de diamètre, les chiffres sont des chiffres romains.
