Eastham is at the south eastern end of the Wirral Peninsula and one of the oldest villages on the peninsula.

A ferry operated from a wharf nearby from the Middle Ages run by the monks from theAbbey of St. Werburgh.

By 1816 the ferry had became privately owned and steam powered paddle steamers were introduced.

In later years competition from ferries further north that were linked to a railway caused the ferry to close in 1929.

The anchor has a date of 1809 on its shaft.
