Fr. Theodore Hesburgh (“Father Ted” as he preferred) joined Notre Dame in 1945 as an instructor in the Department of Religion. He quickly rose through the ranks becoming department head in 1948 and executive vice president in 1949. In 1952 he was named president of the university and served in that role for the next 35 years. He was also active in civic and business endeavors. His list of Presidential appointments, board and non-profit foundation memberships, and participation in other committees and international delegations is too long to expound on here. He was also the author of over a dozen books.

During his years at Notre Dame, Fr. Hesburgh is often credited with transforming the university from one known primarily for football (e.g. the famed backfield known as the four horsemen of the Apocalypse) to the modern university it is today. Over 40 new buildings were built during his tenure as president. Ironically, one of these buildings, now called the Hesburgh Library, features a large mural on its side which has become affectionately known as “Touchdown Jesus.” I guess football is still important at Notre Dame.

The stamp’s design was based on a photograph of Fr. Hesburgh taken on the campus of Notre Dame. Although the stamp’s designer altered the scene a little by moving some trees around, the iconic gold dome of the main administration building is still clearly visible in the background.

Fr. Ted Hesburgh is also in the Guinness Book of World Records. He is noted as the man having the most honorary degrees bestowed upon him, currently over 150. These range from Yale and Princeton all the way to the University of Brasilia.
