The "Timber" in the name West Fraser Timber Park comes from the fact that the site was, among other things, once a sawmill. At the outset of construction of the park the city ran into a roadblock, that being the possibility of a native burial site on the spot where the park's baseball complex was to be located. After much research and archaeological work it was deemed that it was essentially impossible for a burial site to have been in that location as it turned out to be an old channel of the Quesnel River. Construction was agani commenced and the baseball complex completed in the summer of 1996.

The newest and largest of Quesnel's city parks, West Fraser Timber Park is located on the south side of the Quesnel River, directly south of downtown Quesnel. The park now contains four softball diamonds, one baseball diamond, a children's playground, a lawn bowling facility, the Nature Education Centre, four tennis courts, a sand volleyball court, a fitness training area and a system of hiking trails.

City council had a fieldhouse in the works from the time the park was begun, but bids on each contract offered were always simply too far over budget to be accepted by council. Finally, after several fruitless years, a local sawmill, West Fraser Mills Ltd., came to the rescue, donating sufficient funds to make up the most recent shortfall. Further details follow.
New field house at Timber Park

FRIDAY, JUNE 1 will mark another highlight in the development of West Fraser Timber Park. The official opening and ribbon cutting ceremonies will take place for the field house in the park starting at 7 p.m.

The field house provides the park with much-needed washrooms and change rooms. It also contains a concession and storage space for the park goers. On the second floor is space for meetings and a social room.

The field house is an exquisite wood and stone faced structure. Funding initially was budgeted through the City of Quesnel and the Cariboo Regional District. When constructing tenders exceeded budget, West Fraser Mills Ltd. stepped in,. providing the additional funding to complete the project.

Quesnel Girls Softball further agreed to operate the concession, and open for all organized park functions.

The field house and the lawn bowling courts are the first developments in phase two of three phases of development for the Park. Additional facilities in phase two are to include a large pond, nature trails, a toboggan hill, tennis courts, shelters, open space play areas, beach volleyball courts and picnic areas. Developments will proceed as funds become available.

The City of Quesnel is grateful to the many major contributors to the park to date. Without this support, the Park Committee would have had neither the funding, nor the energy to reach this stage of park development.
