Ce chantier hors norme a permis de donner une seconde vie à ce chef-d’œuvre de plomb signé Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi, plus de 120 ans après son inauguration. Une oeuvre à admirer sur la place des Terreaux.
Installée place des Terreaux (d'abord à un bout de la place puis déplacée au centre en 1992), la fontaine fut terminée en 1888. Elle représente la France (Marianne) et les 4 fleuves (les chevaux). Commandée à l'origine par la ville de Bordeaux, elle représentait le "char triomphal de la Garonne". La ville de Bordeaux l'ayant trouvée trop chère, c'est la ville de Lyon qui l'acquit lors de sa présentation à l'Exposition Universelle de 1889. Installée place des Terreaux en 1891, elle est déplacée en 1992 et classée Monument Historique le 29 sept 1995. Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi (1834-1904) a également réalisé la statue de la Liberté de New York et le Lion de Belfort.
2016-2018 : Un chantier de restauration complexe
« Rodin a donné la vie au bronze, Bartholdi a donné la vie au plomb » aime à rappeler Didier Repellin, Inspecteur Général des Monuments Historiques et Architecte en chef des monuments historiques, maître d'œuvre de la restauration de la fontaine Bartholdi. Le choix de Bartholdi d’utiliser la technique très rare du plomb martelé a fait de ce chantier un défi pour les architectes et artisans mobilisés sur cette restauration d’une ampleur exceptionnelle, citée en exemple par les experts du patrimoine du monde entier.
En juin 2016, Amphitrite quittait la place des Terreaux pour être transportée dans les ateliers de la Fonderie Coubertin en région parisienne : corrosion, déformations, fissures, dégradations… le chantier s’est révélé encore plus complexe qu’attendu ! Les compagnons du devoir ont travaillé un plomb très abîmé pour nettoyer puis redonner forme et patine à Amphitrite et aux différents éléments démontés (chevaux, chérubins, décors du char…). Il aura fallu plus d’un an pour opérer cette cure de jouvence.
Sombre et lumineuse, en référence à la teinte originelle du plomb, la statue a retrouvé la place des Terreaux le 3 octobre 2017, après les quatre chevaux jaillissant des flots, mais sa remise en eau n'a lieu qu'au printemps 2018, le 22 mars.
La sculpture n’est pas le seul élément de la fontaine à avoir bénéficié d’une restauration. Le chantier concernait également les pierres du bassin, l’étanchéité, la fontainerie, sans oublier le système d’éclairage. La restauration est restée fidèle au projet de son créateur, tout en utilisant les techniques les plus modernes. Ainsi un dispositif alliant brumisation et fibre optique a par exemple été mis au point pour permettre de retrouver les « naseaux fumants » des chevaux. Bartholdi lui-même n’avait jamais réussi à obtenir parfaitement cet effet ! Ainsi la restauration va permettre aux visiteurs d’admirer pleinement le réalisme et le dynamisme de cette œuvre magistrale.

An emblematic element of Lyon's heritage, the fountain at Place des Terreaux has undergone a total restoration, completed in 2018 and made possible in particular by the City of Lyon and the French State.
This extraordinary project has given a second life to this masterpiece of lead by Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi, more than 120 years after its inauguration. A work to admire on the Place des Terreaux.
Installed Place des Terreaux (first at one end of the square and moved to the center in 1992), the fountain was completed in 1888. It represents France (Marianne) and 4 rivers (horses). Commissioned originally by the city of Bordeaux, it represented the "triumphal chariot of the Garonne". The city of Bordeaux having found it too expensive, it was the city of Lyon that acquired it during its presentation at the Universal Exhibition of 1889. Installed Place des Terreaux in 1891, it was moved in 1992 and classified as a Historic Monument September 29, 1995. Frederic-Auguste Bartholdi (1834-1904) also made the Statue of Liberty of New York and the Lion of Belfort.
2016-2018: A complex restoration project
"Rodin gave life to the bronze, Bartholdi gave life to the lead" likes to remember Didier Repellin, Inspector General of Historical Monuments and Chief Architect of historical monuments, master builder of the restoration of the fountain Bartholdi. Bartholdi's choice to use the very rare technique of hammered lead made this site a challenge for architects and craftsmen mobilized on this restoration of an exceptional scale, cited as an example by heritage experts around the world.
In June 2016, Amphitrite left the place des Terreaux to be transported in the workshops of the Coubertin foundry in the Paris region: corrosion, deformation, cracks, degradations ... the site was even more complex than expected! The companions of duty worked a very damaged lead to clean and then give shape and patina to Amphitrite and the various dismantled elements (horses, cherubs, decorations of the tank ...). It took more than a year to perform this makeover.
Dark and luminous, in reference to the original hue of the lead, the statue found the Place des Terreaux on October 3, 2017, after the four horses gushing out of the waves, but its re-watering took place only in the Spring of 2018, on March 22nd.
The sculpture is not the only element of the fountain to have benefited from a restoration. The maekover also concerned the stones of the basin, the watertightness, the fontainerie, without forgetting the lighting system. The restoration has remained faithful to the project of its creator, while using the most modern techniques. For example, a device combining misting and optical fiber has been developed to help see the "smoking nostrils" of horses. Bartholdi himself had never managed to get that effect perfectly! Thus, the restoration will allow visitors to fully admire the realism and dynamism of this masterful work.
