Upstream navigation on the Connecticut is prevented by a series of rapids at Windsor Locks, CT. The Enfield Dam was constructed in 1827 to divert water into the Windsor Locks Canal and thus provide a route around the rapids. The dam is made of crisscrossed logs with rock fill. It is 1,500 feet long. In the 1970's the breaches began to form in the dam and water level above the dam has dropped.
