In the early 1850s, Thomas Allen (1813-1882) was a member of the Missouri State Senate. In 1881, Allen was elected to the United States House of Representatives. He died in Washington the following year.

Thomas Allen was born and raised in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. He was buried in the Pittsfield Cemetery. To mark the burial site, a monument was created from granite in Allen's quarry in Missouri. This obelisk is the world's largest piece of polished red granite. The monument can be seen from many areas of the cemetery.
