"It was the Duchess Louise-Marie de Gonzague, future queen of Poland, who laid the first stone, in June 1639. The work was completed in 1649. Of this monastery, it remains today only the chapel.
The convent of the Nevers visitandines is the seventh foundation of the Order of the Visitation Sainte-Marie created in 1610 in Annecy by François de Sales and Jeanne de Chantal
This establishment is the work of Vincent Bouzitat, bourgeois of Nevers, whose two girls wanted to devote themselves to God. He received the help of Monsieur de Chateau-Renaud, Baron de Langes, and the assent of Duke Charles de Gonzague and Bishop Eustache du Lys.
On July 13, 1620, the aldermen of Nevers authorized the visitandines to settle in the rue Saint-Martin, in three houses bought for this purpose a large garden extending to the ramparts of the city.
From this monastery, there remains today only the chapel and a spiritual and satirical poem written in 1734 by Jean-Baptiste Gresset, Ver-Vert, or the Travels of the parrot of the Visitation of Nevers. The nuns are now installed in the monastery of the Visitation located 49 road Saulaies Nevers.
The chapel of this former monastery has a facade with an astonishing Baroque style, unique in Nivernais, and rare in France. It is the subject of a classification under the Monuments historiques. "
