Cette première murale de la série réalisée par Phillip Adams évoque le thème de l’air en jouant avec les perspectives : la prépondérance du ciel fond le bâtiment dans son environnement. La partie inférieure de l’œuvre est un clin d’œil historique à l’architecture du quartier avant la construction des Habitations Jeanne-Mance en 1958. Un partenariat avec le Centre d’histoire de Montréal a permis à l’artiste de s’inspirer de photographies d’époque pour reconstituer un paysage urbain d’époque à la fois fictif et hyper réaliste, jouant lui aussi avec les perspectives. La présence des cônes orange au bas de l’oeuvre apporte une touche contemporaine et contribue à identifier le site et son histoire au cœur du centre-ville.

Originaire d’Atlanta et résident de Philadelphie, Phillip Adams détient une maîtrise en beaux-arts de l’Université de Philadelphie. Il est sensible à la culture de masse occidentale et la déshumanisation liée à notre société de consommation. Son esthétique d’art mural est anamorphique, autant dans le trompe-l’œil classique que dans un style plus contemporain et ludique qui lui est propre. Il a plus d’une dizaine de murales à son actif.

Continuing along the theme of the four seasons found in the murals produced at the Jeanne-Mance Housing Complex, MU has begun a new series on the theme of the four elements (air, water, earth and fire). This first mural of the series, produced by Phillip Adams, evokes the theme of air by playing with perspectives : the dominating sky causes the melting of the building into its environment. The lower part of the work is an historical allusion to the neighbourhood’s architecture prior to the construction of the Jeanne-Mance Housing Complex in 1958. A partnership with the Centre of Montreal History allowed the artist to use period photographs as inspiration to recreate the urban landscape of the past, in both a fictional and hyper-realistic fashion, allowing him to play with perspectives as well. The presence of the orange cones at the bottom of the mural adds a contemporary touch and contributes to identifying the site and its history at the heart of downtown Montreal.

Atlanta native and resident of Philadelphia, Phillip Adams holds a Master’s degree in Fine Arts from Philadelphia University. He is sensitive to western mass culture and the dehumanisation linked to our consumer society. His mural art esthetic is anamorphic, as much in the classical trompe-l’oeil as in a contemporary and playful style that he is known for. He has more than 10 murals to his credit.
