Robert Sterling Clark was an heir to the Singer Sewing Machine fortune. After serving in World War I he married the French actress Francine Clary. Together they began collecting art throughout Europe.

In 1952 they began the construction of the white marble building near the campus of Williams College for their collection. This building currently houses the permanent collection of the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute. In 2001 the Clark Art Institute announced a master plan to expand the museum and develop the 140-acre campus. The result are the new buildings that surround the original white marble, the wide paved terrace and the reflecting pool.

A newer building on the west side of the museum houses the admissions center, special exhibit rooms, cafe, and gift shop. The newer building on the house the auditorium, the library, and the research and academic facilities.

The permanent collection is displayed in 17 rooms. The collection includes paintings and sculptures representing: American Art, Impressionist Paintings, European Art, Sculpture, and European Decorative Arts. Featured are works by: American artists such as: Winslow Homer, George Inness, John Singer Sargent, and Mary Cassett and a strong collection of French Impressionists paintings by such artists as Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Edgar Degas, Paul Cézanne and Claude Monet.
