A railway line was first built here in 1830, The Cromford and High Peak line and a station was built here.
In 1899 the Buxton and Ashbourne line was built and formed a junction close to the station.
By 1967 passenger numbers had decline and both lines were closed down. The site is in the Peak District National Park and so in 1975 both the lines were converted to cycling walking and horse riding trails for recreational use.
The combined length of trails is 30 miles and are popular and well used routes.
The information centre has a small shop, cafe and also a cycle hire centre with a variety of different bikes including tricycles.
The repair stand has a variety of tools and there is also an air pump nearby. Their use is free but their is a donation box for anyone that wishes to leave a donation.
