Oversized monument of Ernst I. (The Pious One) in front of Friedenstein Castle in Gotha.

Ernst I., the Pious One (* 25. December 1601 in Altenburg; † 26. March 1675 in Gotha) descended from the Weimar branch of the Ernestinian Wettins and was Duke of Saxony-Gotha since 1640. By falling victim to a considerable part of the duchy of Saxony-Altenburg, he founded the House of Saxony-Gotha-Altenburg in 1672.
